Sarcoidosis is a rare, little-known, inflammatory disease that affects many different areas of the body, particularly the lungs and lymph glands. In the United States, only four out of every 10,000 people are diagnosed with this potentially deadly disease.

Have you or someone you know been recently diagnosed with sarcoidosis? You may never have heard of this illness before because it affects only about 0.02% of the population. In fact, many people that have sarcoidosis either don’t know they do because they have no symptoms, or it is found in an X-ray that is taken for a completely unrelated matter. The disease itself consists of nodules caused by inflammation in the lungs, as well as other organs in the body. While there are some common symptoms usually involving a person’s lungs, the specific organs affected by the disease will determine which symptoms will appear. To understand how this illness might affect you or a loved one, it helps if you know what sarcoidosis is, what causes it, and what the symptoms and treatments might be.
