Q: What is a SHAPE test?

A: SHAPE stands for sub-maximal heart and pulmonary evaluation. This test provides an assessment of exercise tolerance and exercise response to determine whether a patient’s exercise intolerance is related to pulmonary disease, cardiac disease, or lack of conditioning. Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes, preferably designed for walking. This is for your safety.

Q: What is a 6-minute exertion test?

A: This test measures the distance you can walk quickly on a flat, hard surface in 6 minutes and reflects your ability to perform daily physical activities. If you do not feel you can walk, alert the clinical staff upon arrival, as we can modify the test.

If your oxygen level decreases to 88%, we will stop testing and apply supplemental oxygen. The provider will order continuous oxygen therapy if criteria is met.

Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes, preferably for walking. This is for your safety. If you normally use a walking aid such as a cane or walker, please bring it with you to your appointment.

Q: What is an OPO test?

A: An overnight pulse oximetry (OPO) test monitors and records the level of oxygen in your blood as you sleep through the night at home. An oxygen sensor is clipped to your finger and connected to a machine called an oximeter. The oximeter measures and records your heart rate and the level of oxygen carried in your blood.

Q: What does allergy skin testing do?

A: This testing checks for immediate allergic reactions to as many as 40 different substances at once, without needles. It is usually done to identify allergies to pollen, mold, pet dander, and dust mites common in this area.
