Breathing Tests for COPD, Asthma & Other Pulmonary Conditions

Pulmonary Function Test (PFT)

Diagnosing pulmonary conditions usually starts with a pulmonary function test (PFT). These tests are noninvasive and measure the lung volume, capacity, rates of air flow, and the exchange of oxygen and carbon monoxide when you breathe.

One type of PFT is performed inside a small clear room with a breathing machine that you will breathe into during the test. This test measures many functions of the lung and can give the doctor important information.

Spirometry

Another test, called spirometry, is done to help diagnose asthma. To perform this test, you will be asked to blow air into a mouthpiece that is connected to a meter. The spirometry measures the volume of air exhaled and at what rate.

Some other tests that we can perform are:

  • Cardiopulmonary stress test
  • SHAPE (Sub-maximal heart and pulmonary evaluation) testing
  • Six-minute walking test
  • X-rays
  • Pre-op and post-op evaluations

Treatments for pulmonary conditions are as diverse as the conditions themselves. Steroid inhalers are used for asthma, as well as Xolair® injections for moderate to severe allergic asthma patients.

In the case of COPD, lifestyle changes are necessary, such as quitting smoking and participating in a respiratory rehabilitation program. Medications such as a bronchodilator and oxygen therapy may be necessary in more severe cases.
